Ditch the Toe Clips


My toe clips and straps are headed for the garbage can. I’ve used them on my mountain bike for years but yesterday I could not get out of them quickly enough and sustained a foot sprain on what should have been a painless fall.

I didn’t have enough momentum riding uphill through a rocky trail. When I stopped my wheel suddenly turned left and I began to fall right. I tried to slide my foot out of the straps but my foot was trapped. Down I went.

With Clipless pedals you can adjust the release so your feet are always able to unclip  (Similar to ski bindings). But with toe clips I was strapped in with only one release option: pull foot backwards. There is no side escape.

It’s my second day on the sofa. I am treating my foot to Ice, Advil and elevation. I am thankful it’s not serious and expect to be up and mobile soon. But one thing is clear; no more toe clip systems for this girlfriend.
